Dr. Derek Cheng earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After completion of this Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1996, Dr. Cheng received his Masters of Science Orthodontic specialty degree from Marquette University in 1998. Dr. Cheng is also a board certified orthodontist requiring more rigorous testing.

Dr. Cheng continues to advance his education by attending the American Association of Orthodontists meeting annually. For the benefit of our patients he has also completed the Roth-Williams 2 year advanced orthodontic continuing education course focusing on the relationship of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), teeth and masticatory muscles.

Dr. Cheng has been practicing orthodontics for more than 25 years and is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, World Federation of Orthodontics, Illinois Society of Orthodontics, Winnebago County Dental and American Dental Association.Dr. Cheng also served as the President of the Winnebago County Dental Association in 2017-2018.

The American Board of Orthodontics was founded in 1929.
It is the oldest and most prestigious specialty board in dentistry.
The ABO's aim is to elevate the standards of the practice of orthodontia, to familiarize the public with its aim and ideals, and to protect the public against irresponsible and unqualified practitioners.
To evaluate the knowledge and clinical skills of graduates of accredited orthodontic programs by conducting exams and conferring time-limited certificates.
To re-evaluate clinical knowledge and skills through administration of recertification exams throughout a Diplomate's career.

Dr. Cheng graduated top 3 percent of his dental school class at Temple University before he was selected from one of the best clinical orthodontic program in the United States (Marquette University).
Dr. Cheng has also completed an additional 2 year post-orthodontic specialty program that focuses on the relationship of temporomandibular joints, teeth, and masticatory muscles.

Now that you have your braces, how do you take care of them?
It's important for you to know how to properly take care of your braces throughout your entire orthodontic treatment.
Don't worry, you'll be eating popcorn and snacking on potato chips again in no time!
However, before you can start enjoying some of the treats you love, you will need to take special care to avoid any foods that could damage your new appliances.
When you first get your braces, you may notice that your teeth and mouth feel a little tender or sore.
Although true orthodontic emergencies are rare, we are here to help you when they happen.
If you are in severe pain or have a problem that you cannot resolve on your own, call the office.
Our orthodontic team will be able to give you advice on how to solve the problem yourself or schedule you the appropriate appointment so that we can resolve any discomfot.
If you are out of town, try to obtain help from the nearest orthodontist in the area.
There is a good chance that you may be able to temporarily resolve many of the simple issues yourself until we can see you at the earliest appointment.
