He earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Oklahoma State University before going on to the Baylor College of Dentistry for his dental degree, then completed a specialized post-graduate residency in orthodontics, as well as a Master of Science degree in Orthodontics, from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.
His master's thesis "Longitudinal Growth Changes in the Face from 18 to 42 Years" was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics.
