At the first visit to the orthodontist, diagnostic records are made to determine the best course of treatment.
Complete diagnostic records typically include a medical/dental history, clinical examination; digital study models of the teeth without using goopy impressions, photos of the patient's face and teeth, and digital X-rays.
This information is used to develop a custom treatment plan for each patient.
These records are also helpful in tracking the progress of treatment as the teeth move under orthodontic care.

Appliance: Anything your orthodontist attaches to your teeth, which moves your teeth or changes the shape of your jaw.
Archwire: The metal wire that acts as a track to guide your teeth along as they move.
It is changed periodically throughout treatment as your teeth move to their new positions.
Bracket: A metal or ceramic part cemented ("bonded") to your tooth that holds your archwire in place.
Coil Spring: A spring that fits between your brackets and over your archwire to open space between your teeth.

Just as orthodontics repositions teeth, surgical orthodontics (also known as orthognathic surgery) corrects jaw irregularities to improve the patient's ability to chew, speak, and breathe and for improved facial appearances.
In other words, surgical orthodontics straightens your jaw.
Moving the jaws also moves the teeth, so braces are always performed in conjunction with jaw correction.
This helps make sure teeth are in their proper positions after surgery.
Your orthodontist will consider surgical orthodontic treatment for non-growing adult patients with improper bites and those with facial aesthetic concerns.

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.
An orthodontist is a specialist who has completed an advanced education program following dental school to learn the special skills required to manage tooth movement and guide facial development.
Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age.
Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed.
Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications.
