We promote public awareness of the need and benefits of orthodontic treatment and foster the delivery of ethical, quality, professional orthodontic care. We are dedicated to improving the art and science of orthodontics. To do so, every March we offer many hours of continuing education at the FAO Annual Session in Tampa as well as expanded duties certification courses for staff members during the year all across the state.

Join us for networking and fun at our Annual Session and learn about The Digital Orthodontic Practice. We have more than 400 members all across the great state of Florida who provide high-quality care. The FAO is led by an Executive Committee, and these officers are elected by the general membership. We've compiled an extensive list of helpful, informative, reputable websites for you to utilize.

Founded in 1940 by eight orthodontists headed by Drs.
William "Billy" Buhner, Charles E. Harrison and Roy T. Bovard, the Florida Orthodontic Study Group has grown into the Florida Association of Orthodontists.
In 1954, the Florida Orthodontic Study Group became the Florida Orthodontic Society.
University trained orthodontists, like Drs.
Richard Starr, Robert Litowitz, Douglas Walter and Robert Helms, were instrumental in bringing new techniques to Florida patients.
The Society was renamed the Florida Society of Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Orthopedics in 1978 and came to its present Florida Association of Orthodontists in 1985 to better mirror the relationship of the FAO to the AAO and SAO.
Connect with your colleagues and learn the latest updates from the Southern Association of Orthodontists, Florida Dental Association and your FAO leadership.
The FAO Annual Session is held in Tampa in the month of March.
This two-day meeting offers over nine hours of continuing education and is a great opportunity for orthodontists to learn/review new techniques, visit local vendors, build relationships and network with colleagues.
Below is the schedule for the expanded duties courses offered through the FAO throughout Florida.
Much thanks goes out to our Expanded Duties Committee, chaired by Dr. Richard Mariani, for the time and effort it takes to put on these essential courses for our staff.
Please note that the expanded duties course offered by the FAO covers 6 of the 9 delegable functions applicable to most orthodontic offices.
The three not covered are: 1) radiology certification, 2) taking alginate impressions for diagnostic study models and 3) application of acid etch prior to bonding new brackets.
