Dr. Hirce received his undergraduate degree with honors from Saint Bonaventure University. He went on to New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry where he received his D.M.D. degree after graduating first in his class. He was invited to teach restorative dentistry at Southern Illinois University for two and a half years before being accepted in a three year orthodontic residency at the Mayo Clinic, a program which accepts only one resident per year.
He graduated with a certificate in Orthodontics from the Mayo Clinic and a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) from the University of Minnesota.
