An orthodontic screening is recommended at the age of 7. By this age, several permanent teeth in most children have erupted and many tooth alignment or jaw growth problems can be detected.
You know how important it is to brush and floss properly when you're wearing braces - but what's the best way to do that?
Let's start with the basic brushing tools: Either a soft-bristle brush or a bi-level brush (one that has shorter bristles in the middle and longer bristles at the edges) can be effective.
Used carefully, an electric toothbrush can work just as well.
But be sure the electric brush is set to a moderate power level, and don't let its vibrations cause the back of the brush to hit brackets or braces!
In some families, it's a given that your kids will need braces, you wore them, your spouse wore them, and while your children hit the jackpot in many areas, straight teeth were not in the genetic pool deck of cards for them.
With other kids, you might be surprised when the doctor tells you that they need braces.
While they might look straight to you, the doctor is also looking at the bite, how the upper and lower teeth meet each other, and they know that a subtle change can help avoid problems in the future.
They can also create health issues such as increased risk for decay (crowded teeth that are difficult to clean) or headaches and jaw pain (bad bite or misaligned teeth).
You may even have trouble chewing or talking.
At your initial appointment, our orthodontics team will examine your teeth for the above issues.
We will also make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and disease-free.
We will then design your treatment plan, taking dental X-rays, impressions, and other records.
We will explain each step of the treatment process thoroughly so that you can begin treatment comfortable with your choices and confident in your results.
