When they were barely old enough to drive, Lance and Ryan Dowdle were already learning their craft in orthodontic laboratories. It was the beginning of a unique decades-long partnership that is at the heart of Excel Orthodontics, Inc., the Portland, Oregon company they founded in 1990. Under the brothers' guidance, Excel has earned a sterling reputation for providing state-of-the-art, expert laboratory services for today's busy orthodontic practices.
Their commitment to service is shared by the entire team at Excel, where a number of skilled technicians and staff have served for more than 10 years. Our customers have come to depend on the kind of continuity and quality Excel delivers, which is why many have been with us since the beginning. In fact, some of our practice partners are even on their second generation of doctors.
The roots of this success started when Lance was just 15 years old and landed his first practice-based laboratory job. Four years later, he introduced his younger brother, Ryan, to the profession.

Anterior Aligners are appliances that are best suited for cases that require uncrowding or rotating of the anterior teeth to achieve alignment.
Excel Orthodontics offers a full line of both Invisible Aligners and Spring Aligners.
A Spring Aligner is a modified Hawley type of retainer and has spring action built in to move the teeth, while Invisible Aligners are a series of tight-fitting custom-made mouthpieces that slip over the teeth.

In general, bite plates are used at the beginning of treatment to help correct a "deep bite" or open bite.
Bite Plates use an acrylic plane on either the anterior or posterior teeth to help reposition the jaw or prevent bruxism.
Excel Orthodontics offers both removable Bite Plates, or Fixed Bite Plates.

Maxillary and mandibular expanders include a broad range of appliance designs.
The designs are used to correct cross-bites, narrow arches and crowding.
The expanders utilize some mechanism of force (expansion screws, self-activating wire or wire activation) for development of the arch.
Expanders require minimal patient compliance and provide the doctor with better control during active orthodontic treatment.
Auxiliary attachments such as brackets and habit breakers can be incorporated in most expansion appliances.

Retention is the phase of orthodontic treatment that helps to keep teeth in their corrected position after correction with orthodontic (dental) braces.
Without retention there is a tendency for the teeth to return to their initial position.
This unfavorable change from the corrected position is known as relapse.
Excel Orthodontics offers several types of Retention Appliances, including Hawley Retainers, Invisible Retainers (essix), and Bonded Lingual Retainers.

Dental or Orthodontic Splints are devices that are used when patients suffer from certain types of dental problems such as TMJ problems or chronic headaches.
In orthodontics, a "splint" is designed to fit on top of the upper or lower teeth.
An Occlusal Splint (also called a bite splint, bite plane, or night guard) is a removable dental appliance carefully molded to fit the upper or lower arches of teeth worn to reduce the amount of grinding pressure transferred to the teeth.
Full occlusal coverage (Thermal Plastic base and a hard Cold Cure for the Occlusal Surface).
